When we left Charleston, West Virginia, we headed for Fancy Gap, Virginia and the Blue Ridge Parkway anticipating a great, scenic drive from Fancy Gap to Asheville, North Carolina. When we woke up in Fancy Gap we couldn’t see from the back to the front of the camper, just 38 ft. We waited as long as we could to leave, hoping the fog would burn off… no such luck. The picture below is of one of the first overlooks we saw.
Bummer
We drove onward and had a short break in the fog when we got to Linville Falls. It is a nice hike, not too long or strenuous, just a good break from driving. Of course the falls are beautiful. A bonus is we were able to take Spirit with us on the hike as it is dog friendly.
A view of an unidentified valley as we ascended Mount Mitchell. As you can see, the cloud cover was still very low.
We made it to the top of Mount Mitchell in spite of the fog. It was 60 degrees and the wind was howling.
Dinner at the restaurant on Mount Mitchell. The peach cobbler is great! As you can see, the fog lasted ALL DAY.
We typically plan our travel for daylight hours and rarely fail to complete setup in our new campground before dark. On this day we were still on the Blue Ridge Parkway when darkness fell, because of the need to drive so slowly in the fog. Our stay in Asheville was marred by rain, including a minor brush with then tropical storm Michael. Bad weather was the story for our time in western North Carolina.
