It is easy to bypass state parks and forests in favor of the national parks and forests as we travel around North America. Recently we have started to visit more state parks and forests, especially while east of the Mississippi River. North Carolina’s DuPont State Forest during the leaf peeping season is well worth the visit. As a bonus for us it is located not too far from Jane’s mom (and sister).
DuPont State Forest is managed for recreation. In its 10,473 acres you will find 82 miles of trails and primitive roads that can be used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians.
The forest features four waterfalls along the Little River. All of them are reachable in one hike of about 7 miles that includes lots of uphill hiking. Joe visited three of the falls on his day visit.
DuPont State Forest, located in western North Carolina, is a popular fall hiking location, especially on weekends. The falls are beautiful and the trails are generally wide and well maintained. Next time we visit Jane’s mom Joe hopes to make a return trip.
